About three years ago the Youth Space got together with a few other services in the Moreton Bay Region and started advocating for a headspace to be opened somewhere in our region.
We did this because the numbers of young people experiencing some kind of mental health issue in our region were on the rise – and sadly, three years later, they’re still rising!
Statistically, 1 in 4 young people will at some point experience a mental health episode and those episodes could be anything from anxiety to an eating disorder to schizophrenia. An emerging mental health issue can be a frightening thing for a young person and their family, and it’s important we jump on mental health stuff as soon as possible to increase the possibility of recovery.
This was why the CAG (the Moreton Bay Region’s Collaborative Action Group) started applying pressure to the federal government – and our advocacy paid off and a headspace was announced last year.
In January of this year, the headspace centre opened it’s doors and started taking in clients.
On February the 14th, headspace officially opened it’s doors with a full day celebration.
The Youth Space would like to officially welcome headspace to our community. We look forward to working with them, and we hope our community can embrace them as they have embraced us.
If you want to see someone from headspace, all you need to do is call 3897 1897 or you can drop in and see them in Portwood Place (corners of Oxley Avenue and Portwood Street, Redcliffe).
