After waking up on early Friday and striding out into the chilly winter morning, it had a certain feeling about it, the feeling that today was going to be a great day.
It was a cold start but that changed very quickly after arriving at the space the Sun was beaming not a cloud to be seen and the setting up of this event had got into full swing. Three truck loads worth of fencing was flying around the perimeter, the young people of the Work Skills Traineeship program funded by the Queensland State Government Skilling Queenslanders for Work had arrived and things were happening. They were the heavy lifters behind this event all of the sourcing, planning, mapping, marketing, designing and other miscellaneous aspects that went into putting on the Picnic Hill Event. Then before we knew it… Everything was in place and the gates were open.
At 4pm and there was multitude of people at our entrance eager to take part in the festivities the young people had prepared. It became apparent very quickly we had done something very right. The community turnout for this event was an overwhelming success. We saw families sitting together, enjoying some quality time. There were friends playing large scale board games and crowds of people enjoying local performers and who were enthralled by the live art by aerosol artists.
Giant Scrabble, Connect 4 and Big Block Jenga.
The support the event received was enormous. Thank you for this, nothing could make the team at Picnic Hill / Redcliffe Youth Space smile more than seeing a community come together.
The turnout was bigger than anyone expected… so much so, our delightful food vendors sold out! (Sorry about that, out of our control) However, we have already started planning our next event and making some tweaks to ensure that some of the unfortunate and unforeseeable let’s call them Hiccups are ironed out and that the success is just as fabulous as this one! The generosity of the local community with their feedback and willingness to help will ensure it goes off without a hitch.
